Sutras in plain words: retellings and interpretations

Here we retell Buddhist texts in plain modern language. Each retelling sits next to the original and a canonical translation, so anyone can check whether the meaning has been lost.

A retelling is not yet an interpretation. That is why interpretations are kept apart and signed: whose view it is, what it rests on, and where the tradition ends and our hypothesis begins.

The Metta Sutta: on goodwill towards all beings

A short text of ten stanzas. In Theravada countries it is learned by heart and recited aloud as a protective text; the same text appears ninth in the Khuddakapāṭha. The first half describes how a person seeking peace lives; the second, how to develop goodwill towards all beings without exception.
